Seven MSC container ships pass through Bab al-Mandab with no publicly visible position – the industry calls such voyages dark transits. A dark transit is the passage of a vessel through a sea area with its AIS switched off or manipulated, so that it disappears from commercial tracking platforms. In high-risk waters the practice is defensive: a ship that cannot be located is harder for an attacker to target. The same technique, however, is used to conceal sanctions evasion, illicit ship-to-ship transfers and illegal fishing, which is why authorities, insurers and compliance teams systematically screen for dark activity. For shippers a dark transit has practical consequences: track-and-trace and ETA forecasts break down, and underwriters may demand documentary proof of the route sailed. Distinct from a purely technical AIS outage, which is unintended and normally short-lived.
