The Cape Route, also known as the Cape of Good Hope route, is the sea lane around the southern tip of Africa connecting Asia and Europe while bypassing the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. Shipping lines activate this alternative route when security risks or capacity constraints make the Suez passage unattractive. Compared with the Suez routing, transit time increases by roughly 10 to 14 days and the distance grows by several thousand kilometres. For freight forwarders this means longer lead times, higher bunker costs, scarcer slots and extended round voyage times, which noticeably reduces effective market capacity. Planners must also factor in adjusted arrival times and warehouse scheduling. Historically, the Cape Route was the standard way to Asia until the Suez Canal opened in 1869; since the Red Sea disruptions it has again become a fixed planning basis for many liner schedules. Not to be confused with the Panama Canal route, which links the Atlantic and the Pacific.
