As of: June 2026. Since 3 April 2025 the United States has levied a 25% Section 232 tariff on imported passenger cars and light trucks (HTS 8703/8704); since 3 May 2025 the same rate applies to many automobile parts (including HTS 8407–8409, 8706–8708). The legal basis is Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 (Proclamation 10908), justified on national-security grounds — unlike the reciprocal tariffs, which rest on IEEPA. USMCA-compliant vehicles and parts remain exempt for their U.S. content share. Several trade deals cap the total rate: the EU, Japan and South Korea at 15%, the United Kingdom at roughly 10% (quota). U.S. manufacturers can offset part of the parts duties via an "Import Adjustment Offset": for passenger cars and light trucks 3.75% of the aggregate MSRP of vehicles given final assembly in the U.S. in the first year (3 Apr 2025–30 Apr 2026), reduced to 2.5% from 1 May 2026 (through 30 Apr 2027). The October 2025 truck Proclamation 10984 introduced a parallel offset for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and their engines at 3.75% and extended the offset program through 31 October 2030. Since 1 November 2025 a separate 25% tariff also applies to medium- and heavy-duty trucks (Classes III–VIII) and their key parts, plus 10% on buses (Proclamation 10984 of 17 October 2025). The list of covered parts is expanded quarterly (inclusions process). Not to be confused with general additional duties, antidumping duties or the country-wide reciprocal tariffs — the auto tariff is a sectoral Section 232 measure.
