Airspace is the portion of the atmosphere above a state's territory over which that state exercises sovereignty and regulatory authority through its national aviation body. All flight operations—passenger and freight alike—are governed by domestic law and ICAO international standards. For cargo carriers and freight forwarders, airspace restrictions, NOTAMs, and mandated routings have direct operational consequences: they affect transit times, fuel burn, and ultimately freight rates. Political crises or armed conflict can trigger sudden airspace closures, forcing reroutes on short notice. Airspace should not be confused with an airway, which denotes a specific navigational corridor defined within that airspace.
