Italy's air traffic must prepare for a four-hour strike on Wednesday, September 30th. The Uiltrasporti union has called on ENAV personnel nationwide to strike from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. ENAV is the Italian air navigation service provider.
Additionally, local actions are scheduled at the airports of Milan-Linate, Naples, Bologna, and Bari. Airports are warning of delays and flight cancellations. Legally mandated minimum operations and certain protected flights are expected to proceed.
For air freight, a short strike can have long-lasting effects. Aircraft, crews, and slots fall out of sequence. Pure cargo operators, express connections, and belly cargo can be affected, even if the individual flight is scheduled outside the strike window.
ENAC, the Italian civil aviation authority, publishes a list of guaranteed flights. However, this does not mean that every booked shipment will automatically be loaded. Flight status and cargo status must be checked separately.
Overflights through Italian airspace can also be affected depending on air traffic control decisions. Airlines can shift departure times, swap rotations, or rebook shipments on later flights. Particularly with belly cargo, there is a risk that passengers and baggage will take priority. The strike can be changed or canceled at short notice, so the official ENAV notification remains authoritative.
