Definition & Explanation
An airfreight consolidation program is a forwarding service that combines multiple shipments from different shippers into a single consignment moving under one Master Air Waybill (MAWB). The consolidator – typically a freight forwarder or IATA cargo agent – secures block space with a carrier and passes the rate benefit on to each individual shipper, who receives a House Air Waybill (HAWB) as their transport document. Consolidation is particularly valuable for smaller shippers whose volumes do not justify a dedicated booking or block-space agreement. Unlike express courier services, consolidation programs run on fixed departure schedules over defined lanes, which means slightly longer transit times but significantly lower per-kilogram rates. From a customs perspective, the consolidator appears as the shipper on the MAWB, while the individual HAWBs reflect the actual cargo movements.
