Panoramica
Guernsey (ISO code: GG) is one of the Channel Islands in the English Channel and a British Crown Dependency with broad self-government and its own legislature and administration; defence and foreign affairs rest with the United Kingdom. The climate is mild oceanic. The economy is dominated by financial and business services, complemented by tourism, trade and limited horticulture. External trade is strongly import-dependent, especially for food, fuel and manufactured goods. The ports of St. Peter Port and St. Sampson and Guernsey Airport (GCI) secure the island's supply and logistics. The local currency is the Guernsey pound (GGP), at par with and interchangeable with sterling (GBP), which is also legal tender.

Currently there is neither VAT nor GST. The Bailiwick of Guernsey has decided to introduce a 3 percent Goods and Services Tax from 1 January 2028 (2026 Tax Reform Package). The final decision by the States of Deliberation was expected in July 2026. Until then only import duty and excise duty apply to imports.
Guernsey forms a customs union with the United Kingdom, Jersey and the Isle of Man. Goods wholly obtained and already cleared there arrive without further duty. Goods from the EU and third countries may be liable to import (customs) duty. In addition, excise duty applies to alcohol, tobacco and certain fuels.
The responsible body is the Guernsey Border Agency with its Customs and Excise division, part of the States of Guernsey's Customs and Immigration Service. It is based at New Jetty, White Rock, St. Peter Port.
The approved customs ports are St. Peter Port Harbour (main cargo and passenger port) and St. Sampson's Harbour (bulk, fuel and building-material cargo). Air freight goes via Guernsey Airport (GCI) in Forest. Supply is mainly by ferry from Portsmouth/Poole and St. Malo.
International sanctions are implemented through the Sanctions (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law 2018 (UN, EU and UK measures). Exports of military and dual-use goods are governed by the Export Control (Military, Security and Related Matters) (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Order 2010, which mirrors the UK Export Control Order 2008.
Legal tender is the Guernsey pound (GGP), pegged one-to-one to and interchangeable with the British pound (GBP). Sterling is also legal tender.
Guernsey is heavily import-dependent and connected by only a few ferry lines plus air freight. Atlantic autumn and winter storms and fog in the English Channel can disrupt ferry and air links and cause supply delays.
