Im Aussenhandel ist das Land traditionell stark exportorientiert bei Energie und Rohstoffen, während Industrieerzeugnisse, Maschinen und Konsumgüter importiert werden. Die Importabhängigkeit ist insbesondere bei Technologie, Spezialmaschinen und hochwertigen Industriegütern ausgeprägt. Logistisch besitzt Russland aufgrund seiner geografischen Lage eine potenzielle Transitfunktion zwischen Europa und Asien, die durch politische Rahmenbedingungen und Infrastrukturengpässe eingeschränkt ist. Wichtige Verkehrsträger sind Eisenbahn, Pipelines, Seehäfen und Binnenwasserwege. Die Landeswährung ist der Russische Rubel (RUB).
