Fuel prices in Germany have reached an all-time high. According to the ADAC, a liter of Super E10 cost an average of 2.273 euros nationwide on Sunday, September 13, 2026. This represents a new record. The previous high of 2.203 euros dates back to March 14, 2022. Compared to Friday, the E10 price rose by 1.7 cents according to the German Press Agency.
Diesel is even more important for transport companies. On Sunday, it averaged 2.404 euros per liter, 3.5 cents higher than on Friday. According to ADAC, the record stands at 2.446 euros, dating from April 7, 2026. The gap is now just over 4 cents. Since August 30, diesel prices have increased by approximately 20 cents, and Super E10 by approximately 12 cents, according to dpa.
The main driver is rising crude oil prices. According to ADAC, a barrel of Brent crude climbed from around 100 US dollars on September 8 to approximately 107 US dollars on September 14. The backdrop is the tense situation in the Middle East. Following drone attacks, Saudi Arabia had to shut down an important pipeline; VerkehrsRundschau names the East-West Pipeline. A planned foreign ministers meeting of the Gulf states in Oman did not take place. However, ADAC believes the current price level is only partially justified by oil prices and exchange rates, and calls for greater transparency in price formation.
Politically, there is now debate over a government-imposed fuel price cap. Brandenburg's Minister President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) explicitly demands it, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) also supports a price cap based on the Luxembourg model. Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU) has rejected price capping so far, and the federal government does not want a new fuel rebate. According to VerkehrsRundschau, Luxembourg, Poland, Belgium, and the Czech Republic regularly adjust their maximum prices to market conditions.
How things develop depends primarily on crude oil prices. On Monday, ADAC assumed that daily average prices for both Super E10 and diesel would rise slightly once again.
