At Leipzig/Halle Airport, an extraordinarily serious security incident occurred during the night of August 4-5, 2026. A drone was discovered on airport grounds that, according to the Federal Prosecutor's Office, was equipped with professional explosives and a detonator.
Investigators assume that the drone was intended to cause an explosion on the airport premises. The Federal Prosecutor's Office has since assumed responsibility for the proceedings due to the case's particular significance. The Federal Criminal Police Office is conducting the police investigation.
The discovery location is also significant. The drone was found in the security area near the south runway and in the vicinity of a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. Antonov Airlines operates large An-124 cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle, which are used for both civilian transport and international logistics operations. Whether one of these aircraft was actually the target of the potential attack has not yet been confirmed.
Flight operations had to be temporarily suspended due to the incident. Several aircraft were diverted. Particularly relevant for logistics: A DHL cargo aircraft had to abort its landing due to the airfield closure and subsequently collided with an unidentified object in the extended airport area. Investigators consider another drone to be possible. The aircraft was able to safely fly to Hannover. Minor damage was found there.
DHL Chief Tobias Meyer spoke of "distinctly noticeable" operational impacts. Leipzig/Halle is one of Europe's most important air cargo hubs. The airport reports approximately 1.4 million tons of cargo annually and around 70 scheduled and charter cargo flights per day. For DHL, Leipzig is a central European express hub.
Politically, the case is being taken very seriously. Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster described it as a serious security incident. CDU defense policy politician Roderich Kiesewetter suspects a Russia-controlled hybrid attack and calls for NATO consultations under Article 4.
Important to note: Russian involvement has not been proven to date. Investigations are ongoing.
