About This Seaport
Whanganui's seaward access sits at Castlecliff, where the Whanganui River meets the Tasman Sea on the western side of New Zealand's North Island. The port is being rebuilt under the Te Pūwaha revitalisation programme, with Wharf 1 berthing coastal vessels while Wharves 2 and 3 undergo remedial work. Commercial cargo is currently limited: the sole regular coastal trader, Coastal Bulk Shipping's Anatoki, was withdrawn in April 2026, and the shallow river entrance of about 3.4 m restricts the port to small ships. No container liner service or international customs clearance operates here. Regional freight is better served by Port Taranaki at New Plymouth and CentrePort Wellington.
