About This Seaport
Wellington (NZ WLG) is better known as a ferry pivot than as a box port: CentrePort runs the capital's harbour on Cook Strait, where the Interislander (KiwiRail) and Bluebridge (StraitNZ) RoRo ferries stitch the North and South Islands together. By container volume it sits in the lower half of New Zealand's eleven container ports, handling on the order of 100,000 TEU a year, with volumes easing recently even as the operator's profit rose in 2024/25. Sheltered in a natural harbour, the port records more than 14,000 commercial vessel movements annually across containers, bulk, petroleum and logs. The ferries carry over a million passengers and around NZD 20 billion of freight across the strait each year. Containerised log exports are growing, and a restored rail-onto-port facility feeds boxes and logs straight from the rail network to the terminals. For larger deep-sea container volumes, Tauranga (NZ TRG) and Lyttelton (NZ LYT) are the stronger alternatives.
