About This Seaport
A roughly 190-metre, 7-metre-deep quay forms the working core of Vardø, the easternmost town in Norway, set on Vardøya island in the Barents Sea. Ice-free year-round, the harbour has long served the fishing fleet, and whitefish landings and seafood processing remain the economic mainstay. The same quay receives the Hurtigruten coastal vessel, part of the state-subsidised express route carrying passengers, breakbulk and supplies between Bergen and Kirkenes. Container and international liner traffic is effectively absent, though offshore and energy activity in the Barents Sea may generate further calls in the years ahead. Hinterland access runs over the E75 road, with no rail connection in this remote corner. Shippers needing containerised capacity are better served by Kirkenes to the south-west.
