About This Seaport
Settled by sea-otter hunters in 1833 and later a gold-mining and cod-fishing boom town, Unga — on the largest of the Shumagin Islands in the Gulf of Alaska — lost its post office in 1958 and is no longer occupied year-round. The site is an open roadstead with no commercial port facilities, cargo-handling gear or customs clearance, so its freight relevance is effectively nil. Marine traffic is limited to occasional small craft and subsistence boats. The nearest commercial port is Sand Point, about 15 km to the north, with larger cargo handled via King Cove or the Port of Dutch Harbor.
