NZ TRG Port (Tauranga) – Terminals, Draft, Agents

About This Seaport

At 1,213,494 TEU in financial year 2026 (1 July 2025–30 June 2026, +0.4% year-on-year) and 24.6 million tonnes of total trade, Tauranga is New Zealand's largest port by both container throughput and total volume. Located on the Bay of Plenty by Mount Maunganui on the North Island, it is the country's primary export gateway. Nine ship-to-shore cranes and 53 straddle carriers work the quayline for rapid turnaround. Export logs — some 5.5 million tonnes a year — along with dairy, kiwifruit, forestry products, oil products and fertiliser make up the cargo base. Financial year 2026 delivered a record underlying net profit after tax (NPAT) of NZD 155.3 million, up 23% on the prior year. A landmark development is the fast-track approval of the Stella Passage expansion: approximately 385 metres of additional quay at Sulphur Point and 315 metres at Mount Maunganui will nearly double the port's container-handling capacity. The application was lodged in January 2026 and approved around five months later. A defining feature is MetroPort, the port's inland operation in south Auckland, which moves import containers by rail to New Zealand's largest metropolitan market, effectively making Tauranga the seaport for the Auckland economy. Auckland and Lyttelton (Christchurch) provide complementary container options.
