About This Seaport
Unlike its container-focused neighbour Altamira 20 kilometres up the coast, Tampico is first and foremost a bulk and breakbulk port on the Río Pánuco near its mouth on the Gulf of Mexico, handling around 7.6 million tonnes in 2024. Petroleum dominates: Pemex moves crude and refined products at the Madero terminal, whose berths run about 1,900 metres, while dry-bulk facilities take grain, minerals and petrochemicals and a separate general-cargo terminal manages breakbulk. Containers move in only marginal volumes of roughly 11,000 TEU a year, so box shippers route through Altamira, Mexico's fourth-largest container port, which grew 14.3% in 2024. A channel depth in the 9-to-11-metre range caps vessel sizes. Road and rail feed the industrial hinterland of Tamaulipas and north-eastern Mexico. For reefer or containerised consignments Altamira is the practical alternative, leaving Tampico to play to its strengths in energy, dry bulk and conventional cargo.
