About This Seaport
No box ship calls at Superior: this is a bulk port whose business is moving heavy raw materials across the Great Lakes, and in 2025 it did so at a reduced pace. Together with neighbouring Duluth it forms the Duluth-Superior complex, still the largest tonnage port on the Lakes despite waterborne volumes falling 14.6% to about 25.3 million short tons in 2025. Taconite iron ore leads the trade at around 16.5 million tons in 2025, down from 19.4 million in 2024, followed by low-sulphur coal near 4.7 million tons and a fluctuating grain trade. Facilities such as the Hallett Dock handle coal, dry bulk, fertiliser, ore pellets, salt, scrap and aggregates. Operations are seasonal, with both lake freighters and ocean-going salties calling via the St. Lawrence Seaway, which closes in winter. For containerised cargo, shippers route via the coasts by rail or through Montreal rather than the Great Lakes.
