About This Seaport
At Denmark's northern tip, where the Kattegat meets the Skagerrak, Skagen Havn stands as the country's largest fishing port. It accounts for roughly a quarter of all Danish landing value and, with some 6,000 landings a year, is Northern Europe's biggest port for pelagic fish such as herring, mackerel and sprat destined for fishmeal and fish-oil plants. Beyond fishing and processing, the port is organised around maritime services, cargo and bunkering, and cruise, and is called by more than 650 cargo ships annually. A stage-three expansion added around 1,000 m of new quay, deeper water and 190,000 m² of land. Scheduled container liner traffic is not its focus; throughput centres on fish products, bunker fuel and breakbulk or project cargo. For RoRo and ferry traffic nearby Hirtshals is better suited, while Aalborg handles conventional general and bulk cargo.
