About This Seaport
Sharm El Sheikh is a passenger and cruise gateway rather than a freight port, sitting at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula where the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba meet the Red Sea. Developed as a civilian harbour from the mid-1980s around its yacht marina, it now runs a cruise terminal and scheduled ferry links to Hurghada and to Aqaba in Jordan. In 2024 AD Ports Group secured a 15-year concession to upgrade the cruise terminals at Sharm El Sheikh, Safaga and Hurghada. Classified as an open roadstead with shallow berths, the port serves cruise ships, yachts and supply vessels, but handles no meaningful container or general-cargo traffic. Hinterland access is by road only, complemented by the adjacent international airport. Freight shippers should route containers through Alexandria or Damietta, or use Adabiya and Ain Sokhna on the Gulf of Suez, while Nuweiba carries RoRo ferry cargo to Aqaba.
