A dedicated freight railway, the Betuweroute, plus barge services up the Rhine to Basel and a thick motorway grid give Rotterdam the deepest hinterland reach of any European port. Europe's largest seaport handled 428.4 million tonnes and 14.2 million TEU in 2025, the latter up 3.1 percent on the year even as total tonnage slipped 1.7 percent. Its Maasvlakte deep-sea terminals, run by operators including APM Terminals, Rotterdam World Gateway and ECT, work the world's biggest container vessels with heavy automation. Customs benefits from mature EU Union procedures, AEO frameworks and extensive bonded-warehouse capacity. For forwarders the port covers virtually every cargo type: containers, reefer, dry and liquid bulk, ro-ro and project freight. Within the Hamburg–Antwerp range, Antwerp-Bruges, Hamburg and Bremerhaven are the main alternatives.
