Progreso handles roughly 150,000 TEU a year through Yucatán's only container terminal, operated by APM Terminals on the north coast of the peninsula. Because the Gulf of Mexico shoreline here is very shallow, vessels berth at the seaward end of a causeway and pier about 6.5 kilometres long – among the longest in the world – where oil, dry-bulk, general-cargo and container berths sit alongside a cruise terminal.
