About This Seaport
Operated by the state-linked PLIPDECO, Point Lisas Industrial Port anchors an 860-hectare petrochemical estate on Trinidad's west coast. Its six general-cargo and container berths handle containers, breakbulk, lumber, paper and dry bulk alongside specialised cargoes such as ammonia, methanol, urea, iron ore and iron carbide. The methanol and ammonia plants on the estate make Trinidad one of the world's largest exporters of both commodities. The approach channel runs to about 12.5 metres, with cargo berths around 11 metres. Road links connect the port to San Fernando and Port of Spain; Trinidad no longer has a freight railway. For high-volume container line traffic, Port of Spain remains the alternative, while Point Lisas focuses on petrochemicals and regional breakbulk.
