About This Seaport
Chevron's refinery and Ingalls Shipbuilding anchor Pascagoula, the largest seaport in Mississippi and one of the top 25 US ports for foreign cargo. Its West Harbor on the Pascagoula River handles general and breakbulk cargo, forest and paper products, refrigerated goods and bulk and bagged grain, while the Bayou Casotte East Harbor hosts the refinery, an LNG terminal and petrochemical plants. About 65 percent of the refinery's output leaves by ship or barge, complemented by imports of crude oil, forest products, bulk fish and construction aggregate. At Ingalls, a floating dry dock lifts vessels up to 250 metres long and 38,000 tonnes. Throughput is bulk, breakbulk and liquid rather than containerised liner traffic. Road and rail tie the Gulf of Mexico quays to a hinterland moving vehicles, machinery, fertiliser and petroleum coke. For container shipments, shippers turn instead to nearby Mobile, Alabama, or New Orleans.
