The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey oversees Port Newark–Elizabeth (US EWR), the container core of the busiest port complex on the US East Coast. The wider port handled about 8.9 million TEU in 2025, up 2.3 percent, split into roughly 4.5 million TEU of imports against 1.4 million TEU of exports, the latter growing 6.5 percent. The import-heavy trade keeps empty repositioning constant and tightens detention and demurrage windows; for southeastern destinations, Norfolk and Savannah are the usual alternatives.
