New Bedford (LOCODE: US NBD) has been the most valuable commercial fishing port in the United States every year since 2001, recording landings worth approximately USD 451 million in 2023 and an estimated total economic contribution exceeding USD 11.1 billion for the region. Sea scallops account for roughly 84 % of landings; however, volumes have declined sharply since 2024/25 (estimated 15–18 million pounds, versus a historical range of 40–60 million pounds), attributed to overlapping offshore-wind lease areas and altered marine currents. The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has committed USD 45 million for expansion of the Marine Commerce Terminal (targeted completion December 2026); since 2024 the port has served as an active staging base for Vineyard Wind 1 and is increasingly diversifying into offshore-wind logistics. No container liner services operate; the nearest general-cargo hubs are Providence (RI) and New York/New Jersey.
