About This Seaport
Forestry products — logs, sawn and processed timber — make up the bulk of trade across Port Nelson (NZ NSN), alongside seafood, pip fruit and wine. Serving the top of New Zealand's South Island on Tasman Bay, the port moves around 100,000 TEU and roughly 3.3 million tonnes of cargo a year, about two-thirds of it export. It is the largest seafood processing port in Australasia, supporting major fishing companies and their fleets. Two container berths totalling about 500 m handle boxed cargo at a low-to-moderate automation level. The Tasman and Marlborough hinterland is served by road, without a through rail link. For larger container volumes, Lyttelton and Wellington's CentrePort are the nearest alternatives.
