About This Seaport
Home to Mexico's first oil refinery, Minatitlan (MX MTT) grew up around petroleum on the Río Coatzacoalcos, about 32 kilometres inland from the Gulf of Mexico in south-eastern Veracruz. The Pemex-run refinery still shapes traffic, so crude-derived and petrochemical products dominate cargo here. With a river channel of only about 7.9 metres, deep-sea and tanker tonnage mostly calls at nearby Coatzacoalcos and the Pajaritos oil terminal, linked by pipeline and river. Container and conventional general-cargo activity at Minatitlan itself is minimal. Hinterland connections run by road, rail and the pipeline network across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Forwarders should view Minatitlan as a petrochemical and bulk location, routing containers through Coatzacoalcos or Veracruz.
