About This Seaport
Two marine oil terminals – Avon and Amorco – define Martinez, a petroleum port on the Carquinez Strait within California's San Francisco Bay system, roughly 30 miles inland from the Golden Gate in Contra Costa County. This is a liquid-energy tanker port, not a container or general-cargo facility. After conventional crude refining ceased in 2020, the site was rebuilt as one of the world's largest renewable-diesel plants (a Marathon/Neste joint venture at full rate from 2023), so tanker calls now cover residual crude, bio-feedstocks such as tallow and vegetable oils, and renewable diesel. A channel depth of about 9.4 m caps tanker drafts. Road and rail along the Carquinez corridor link the hinterland toward Sacramento and the Central Valley. For Bay Area containers use the Port of Oakland; for other liquid and dry bulk, Richmond and Benicia are the practical alternatives.
