About This Seaport
Around 500,000 TEU move through Manaus each year, making this Amazon river port the main maritime outlet for the entire upper Amazon basin. Lying some 1,500 km inland at the meeting of the Rio Negro and the Amazon, it receives ocean-going vessels directly and functions as a true deep-sea inland port. Despite an official classification as a small harbour, its container throughput is substantial. Box traffic is concentrated at the private Chibatão and Super Terminais facilities; Chibatão handles most deep-sea calls and all cabotage and is currently extending its quay to 710 metres, positioning itself as the largest private port terminal in Latin America. Equipment includes ship-to-shore gantry cranes, reefer plugs, and dedicated berths for ore, dry bulk, tankers, LPG and RoRo. The Manaus Free Trade Zone drives steady imports of electronics components and industrial inputs. Hinterland distribution relies mainly on the river network and the BR-319 highway, as there is no rail connection. During extreme low-water seasons, Chibatão and Super Terminais shift part of their equipment by barge some 200 km downriver to Itacoatiara to keep ocean-going services running. For cargo bound for southeastern Brazil, Santos is the practical sea alternative, while Belém serves the northeast.
