Rice, salt and containerised goods make up the bulk of trade at Mahajanga (Majunga), the commercial port on Bombetoka Bay in north-west Madagascar. Roughly 66,000 tonnes of containerised cargo, 11,000 tonnes of rice and 7,000 tonnes of salt pass through each year across about 85 vessel calls. Because the single berth is too shallow for large ocean-going ships, much cargo is transhipped by barge, towed alongside by tugs. With container capacity around 800 TEU, the port mainly serves coastal and feeder traffic for the west coast. Larger international consignments typically route via Toamasina (Tamatave) on the east coast.
