About This Seaport
Despite its long maritime history, Machias is today a working lobster town rather than a commercial cargo port. Set at the head of Machias Bay where the Machias River meets the Gulf of Maine in eastern Washington County, its waterfront is given over to lobster, clam and aquaculture operations, with public piers and a boat landing serving small craft rather than freight vessels. For forwarders its commercial relevance is limited; containerised or bulk shipments are handled at Eastport or Searsport (Mack Point) to the west.
