About This Seaport
Run by the Lorain Port and Finance Authority, this Great Lakes harbour sits at the mouth of the Black River where it meets Lake Erie, about 48 km west of Cleveland. Its trade is firmly bulk-oriented, moving roughly 988,000 tons a year of aggregates, ores, limestone, minerals and chemicals alongside imported and domestic stone, sand and salt. Until the closure of the local U.S. Steel mill in 2020, steel-related traffic shaped the docks; that exit reshaped the cargo mix toward construction materials. Access to deep-sea trade runs through the Welland Canal and the St. Lawrence Seaway, but Lorain handles no container or liner services. With parts of the waterfront being redeveloped for public use, its commercial freight role is narrowing. Forwarders needing general cargo, containers or broader bulk options will look to Cleveland, Sandusky or Toledo.
