About This Seaport
Beyond the gondolas and the lagoon's tourist image lies Porto Marghera, the industrial cargo side of Venice on the Adriatic. Its container hub is the VECON terminal, run by PSA Venice since 1988, offering a quay of around 385 metres and 12 metres of depth for containers, RoRo and packaged goods. In 2025 VECON posted a record of around 340,000 TEU (up roughly 11 percent), and its new 2024–2049 concession is backed by €78 million in investment and three fully-electric eRTG cranes delivered late in 2025. The port also handles liquid and petrochemical cargo at the San Leonardo oil port, reached via the Malamocco-Marghera canal, plus dry bulk at dedicated terminals. For freight forwarders, Venice is the maritime gateway to the wealthy northeast of Italy — the Veneto, the Po valley and, across the Alpine passes, Austria and southern Germany. Rail links connect to the inland terminals of Padua and Verona, complemented by motorway access. Project cargo, breakbulk and cruise traffic round out the activity. Lagoon depth limits the very largest container ships, so for deep-draught services Trieste and Koper are the stronger alternatives. Even so, cargo bound for northern Italy finds a versatile, well-connected port here.
