About This Seaport
Trawlers, longliners and processing plants set the rhythm at Kodiak, an ice-free deep-water port on Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska. As one of the busiest fishing ports in the United States, with more than 2,000 commercial vessels, it lives on landings of salmon, pollock, cod and shellfish and their refrigerated onward shipment. General cargo, fuel and temperature-controlled freight reach the island by trailer barge from Seattle, run by operators such as Alaska Marine Lines and Samson Tug & Barge. There is no road link to the mainland: Kodiak is served only by sea and air, plus the Alaska Marine Highway ferry. Scheduled container liner services do not call here; supply runs on barge and breakbulk traffic instead. For containerised consignments, forwarders rely on the Port of Alaska at Anchorage or on Dutch Harbor/Unalaska.
