About This Seaport
Groceries, vehicles, construction machinery, project cargo and refrigerated seafood make up the working freight of Ketchikan, the "First City" at the southern gate of Alaska's Inside Passage. There is no deep-sea container line; supplies arrive by barge with Alaska Marine Lines and Lynden out of Seattle and Tacoma, while chilled and frozen salmon move the other way. Because Revillagigedo Island has no road or rail link to the mainland, virtually every tonne crosses the water. The port also hosts four Panamax cruise berths and is home to the Alaska Marine Highway System, whose ferries carry passengers, vehicles and breakbulk to roadless communities nearby. Forwarders consolidate container volumes in Seattle or Tacoma; for wider cargo handling in the state, Anchorage is the larger alternative.
