About This Seaport

On an open roadstead in the Gulf of Alaska sits the abandoned site of Katalla, once a boomtown of up to 5,000 people during Alaska's first oil rush around 1907. Storms destroyed its half-built jetty that year and the railway terminus shifted to Cordova; the settlement faded, its post office closed in 1943, and the 1964 earthquake lifted the old waterfront by about two metres. There is no commercial port here and no usable cargo infrastructure. For freight in this area, Cordova is the relevant port, having taken over Katalla's role long ago.
