About This Seaport
Fishing is the backbone of Höfn í Hornafirði, a southeast Iceland town set at the mouth of the Hornafjörður lagoon and nicknamed the langoustine capital of Northern Europe. Its harbour lands and processes around 27 million kilos of fish a year, dominated by Norway lobster, while scheduled container lines and international customs clearance play essentially no role here. A shallow entrance of about 6 metres caps vessel size, so larger breakbulk and container flows ride Iceland's coastal carriers (Eimskip, Samskip) and the bigger ports. Overland distribution runs along Route 1, the coastal Ring Road. For container and liner services, Reykjavík's Sundahöfn or the East Fjord ports of Reyðarfjörður and Eskifjörður are the nearest alternatives.
