About This Seaport
NO HKS points to Haakonsvern, the Royal Norwegian Navy's main base and the largest naval station in the Nordic region — not a commercial port, and no freight is handled here. The site lies at Mathopen, some 15 kilometres south-west of central Bergen, and has been in service since 1963, when naval operations moved from Horten in the Oslofjord; around 5,400 officers, conscripts and civilian staff work there today. Alongside the Norwegian Naval Training Establishment it holds repair and maintenance facilities, including an underground dock large enough to take frigates; access is restricted to defence traffic, so forwarders can only enter under a military contract. Ocean freight for the Bergen area goes through the Port of Bergen (NO BGO) for containers and general cargo, the Ågotnes offshore supply base for project and supply loads, or Mongstad (NO MON) for petroleum products.
