About This Seaport

Founded in 1623, Gloucester is the oldest commercial fishing port in the United States and remains a full-service base for New England's fishing fleet rather than a general-cargo harbour. Landings of groundfish, lobster, scallops and herring feed a local seafood-processing industry; in 2018 Gloucester ranked second in Massachusetts with USD 53.2 million in landings. The port does not handle containers or conventional breakbulk, so for forwarders its relevance outside the seafood cold chain is limited.
