About This Seaport
Despite its 'Medium' size classification, Empire today is a district of Coos Bay on the Oregon Pacific coast rather than a stand-alone commercial cargo port, and its freight relevance is limited. Historically tied to the timber trade, the location has no significant container, customs or general-cargo terminals for international liner shipping. The region's commercial traffic moves through the adjacent Oregon International Port of Coos Bay, which handles around 2 million tonnes a year – mainly wood products – and is linked to the rail network via the Coos Bay Rail Line. The planned Pacific Coast Intermodal Port (PCIP, around US$2.3 billion, up to 2 million TEU) on Coos Bay's North Spit could become the US West Coast's first full ship-to-rail container terminal; in 2025 Oregon committed US$100 million towards the channel deepening. Until then, for containerised or deep-sea cargo shippers use Coos Bay itself or the larger West Coast ports of Portland and Oakland.
