About This Seaport
Pemex has owned the Deer Park refinery outright since January 2022, taking full control of a 1,500-acre site it had co-run with Shell for nearly three decades. Set on the Houston Ship Channel about 20 miles east of downtown Houston, the plant processes some 340,000 barrels of crude a day into gasoline, aviation and diesel fuels, marine fuel and petroleum coke. Its dock ranks among the 25 largest US ports by tonnage, but the traffic is tankers and petrochemicals, not boxes. The ship channel carries drafts of around 14 m, and the complex links to road, rail and pipeline networks, with a rail terminal for refined products. This is an energy and petrochemical terminal in the fullest sense, closed to general cargo. Container shippers in the area use Port Houston's Barbours Cut and Bayport terminals instead.
