About This Seaport
Named for the Kenai Peninsula coal seams that Russian-American miners worked from 1852, Coal Point sits at the mouth of Homer's harbour on the Homer Spit in Kachemak Bay, and today functions as a park and shore-fishing spot rather than a freight port. It has no container or general-cargo handling. Commercial cargo in the Homer area is worked at the Port of Homer's Deep Water Dock, while bulk and petroleum traffic on Cook Inlet moves through Nikiski and Anchorage. Freight forwarders should treat Coal Point as a place name, not a working cargo terminal.
