About This Seaport

Chabahar is Iran's only deep-water ocean port, deliberately placed on the Gulf of Oman beyond the Strait of Hormuz, under UN/LOCODE IR ZBR. Two terminals share the traffic: Shahid Beheshti, run by India Ports Global since 2018, and Shahid Kalantari. Container volumes reached roughly 60,000 TEU in 2024 — up more than 500 percent on 2022/23 but from a low base — with the cargo mix leaning toward bulk and breakbulk, including wheat for Afghanistan. In 2025, however, Washington revoked the port's sanctions waiver, further thinning the international liner network. For mainstream container moves out of Iran, Bandar Abbas (Shahid Rajaee) remains the larger option, while cargo from India can route via Mundra.
