About This Seaport
Roughly 10,000 TEU, about 240,000 tonnes of general cargo and some 9.6 million tonnes of crude oil pass through the Calabar Port Complex each year. Sitting on the Calabar River around 84 km inland from the Gulf of Guinea, the port mainly serves eastern and northern Nigeria through three terminals run by ECM Terminal, INTELS and Shoreline Logistics. Cargo ranges from containers, bagged cement, grains and agricultural produce to project and oilfield consignments, bitumen and fish, and in 2021 cocoa shipped from here to the United States for the first time in 14 years. River-channel depth limits vessel size, which is why the Nigerian Ports Authority has earmarked Calabar for rehabilitation alongside Onne and Warri. Customs clearance runs through Nigerian authorities, with Export Process Terminals aimed at simplifying outbound formalities. Shippers needing deep draft or high box volumes typically route via Onne, Port Harcourt or the Lagos ports of Apapa and Tin Can.
