About This Seaport
Port and Terminal Multiservices (PTML), part of the Grimaldi group, anchors Tin Can Island in western Lagos, handling vehicles and containers across a complex split into five separate terminals. The port moves roughly 395,000 TEU a year against a design capacity of about 650,000 and, together with neighbouring Apapa, forms Nigeria's principal import gateway for consumer goods. A channel of around nine metres caps vessel size, so the largest mainline ships now call at the deep-water Lekki port opened in 2023. Cargo handling covers containers, roll-on/roll-off vehicles and general breakbulk, served by mobile harbour cranes, reach stackers and rubber-tyred gantries. Clearance runs through the Nigeria Customs Service, and the National Single Window launched in March 2026 aims to streamline trade procedures and sharply cut clearance times. In October 2025 the Nigerian government approved roughly USD 1 billion for the modernisation of Apapa and Tin Can Island, covering quay-wall rehabilitation and channel dredging to 16.5 metres, with visible construction expected from late 2026. Even so, forwarders should budget for extended dwell times and demurrage caused by chronic congestion in the Apapa corridor. Hinterland distribution is almost entirely road-based, as rail links from Lagos remain limited for containerised freight. For greater capacity or larger vessels, Lekki and Onne are the practical alternatives, while adjacent Apapa suits combined consignments.
