About This Seaport
Phosphate built Port Boca Grande: from 1907 the Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railroad fed an automatic transloader that poured rock straight into ocean-going ships, and by 1969 this was Florida's fourth-busiest port. The rail link closed in 1979 and that trade ended; the quay on Charlotte Harbor now functions mainly as a petroleum terminal serving a Florida Power & Light plant. General cargo, container and customs services for ordinary forwarding are not confirmed here, with Gasparilla Island better known today for tarpon fishing. Shippers with commercial freight in southwest Florida should look to Port Manatee and Port Tampa Bay.
