Bayuquan (CN BYQ) began in 1996 as a COSCO container venture with the Yingkou port authority and has since outgrown its original 250,000-TEU design many times over, handling about 5.65 million TEU in 2020 and ranking among China's top nine container ports. Volumes stayed in the same league afterwards, with roughly 5.2 million TEU in 2021, keeping Yingkou the second-largest box gateway in northeastern China. It forms the modern core of the Port of Yingkou on Liaodong Bay in the Bohai Sea, built on the open bay for deep-draught ships while the older Yingkou harbour sits upriver at the mouth of the Daliao. The terminals, run by Yingkou Port Group, accommodate fifth- and sixth-generation container vessels. Alongside boxes, the port works substantial dry bulk such as coal, iron ore, grain and steel, plus oil and vehicles. As the principal seaward gateway for the northeastern provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang and for Inner Mongolia, Bayuquan is tightly linked to the rail network and serves as a launch point for China-Europe block trains. Road and rail carry cargo deep into the Dongbei industrial belt. Shippers seeking denser liner coverage or more southerly routings turn to Dalian and Tianjin as the nearest alternatives. Customs is handled by China Customs at Yingkou.
