About This Seaport
Some 26 miles of open Pacific separate Avalon, on Santa Catalina Island, from the mainland, and the crossing is run by barge. Avalon Freight Services moves groceries, vehicles, building materials, fuel and even potable water from Berth 95 at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. This is island resupply rather than liner container traffic, landed at a dedicated ramp; express parcels and mail fly in separately to the island's airport. With no customs or container terminal here, ocean cargo is handled at the mainland ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
