A deep-water marine terminal midway between Seattle and Vancouver gives Anacortes (US OTS), on Washington's Fidalgo Island, a niche in breakbulk, high-and-heavy project cargo and liquid bulk rather than container traffic. From Pier 2 the port ships refinery byproducts — chiefly petroleum coke and pelletized sulfur — across the Pacific Rim, alongside general project components staged on its upland laydown areas. Two refineries anchor the local industrial base: Marathon's plant at about 119,000 barrels per calendar day (bpcd) and the former Shell, now HF Sinclair, Puget Sound refinery at roughly 149,000 barrels per day, both moving product partly by ship and barge. Washington State Ferries operates a passenger and vehicle terminal at Ship Harbor, linking the San Juan Islands and Sidney, British Columbia. Road access runs via State Route 20, with no direct rail line onto the terminal itself. Containerised cargo to and from the Pacific Northwest is handled by the Northwest Seaport Alliance at Seattle and Tacoma, about two hours south.
