Overview
The French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF, ISO code TF) are a French overseas collectivity with special status, made up of five districts: Crozet, Kerguelen, Saint-Paul and Amsterdam, Adélie Land (Antarctica) and the Scattered Islands (Îles Éparses) in the Indian Ocean. They have no permanent population; only around 40 to 100 scientists and support staff stay seasonally at the stations. The territory is run by a prefect acting as senior administrator, based in Saint-Pierre on La Réunion. As an Overseas Country and Territory (OCT) the TAAF are associated with the EU but belong neither to the EU customs territory nor to the EU VAT area, and rank as a third country for customs purposes. The currency is the euro. The economy is dominated by scientific research and licensed fishing for Patagonian toothfish. Supply is exclusively by sea: the subantarctic islands via the research vessel Marion Dufresne from La Réunion, and the Antarctic station Dumont d'Urville via L'Astrolabe from Hobart, Tasmania. There is no commercial liner or cargo traffic.
